HorseTrek Monteverde doesn't only run the multi-day horseback riding vacation, but also runs a number of local horseback riding tours in the Monteverde area for those of you, horse lovers, who only have a day or two to spend in this pristine area of Costa Rica. These rides are a great and an adventurous way to discover the countryside of Monteverde and Costa Rica!

Each excursion in Monteverde vary in length, from 2 to 5 hours on horse, yet all offer a lot of fun and breath-taking views of the mountains and the cloud forest.  And Who Knows, if luck is on your side, perhaps will you get also a peek at some of the incredible wild-life of Costa Rica.

Our local horse rides are available daily, seven days a week, for horseback riders of all level of experience and all age. Even though flexible, due to the length of some of these tours and the unavoidable coming of night, everyday around 6 PM, the departure times vary depending on the tour you choose.

Horseback riding tour to the San Luis Waterfall

  (Total duration: 5.5 Hours - 3.5 hours on horse)

Visit the area most tourists miss. Ride with a Costa Rican horseman on well-trained mountain horses, through rolling hills covered by lush coffee plantations. The area provides with spectacular views of the Pacific and the cloud forests. You will wind down a steep track unsuitable for cars until you reach the valley of San Luis. After the initial 1.5 hour ride the horses are left and there is a 30 minute adventurous hike through a beautiful forest along a river. At the breathtaking 100m San Luis Waterfall you will have chance to relax and admire the waterfall, you can swim if you want but the water is very cold! After the hike back, the horses are once again mounted for the 2 hour ride back.


The trip includes:
An experienced Costa Rican (Spanish speaking) guide, challenging hike along the river,
3.5 hours of riding, and a lot of fun for riders!

Cost:
US$52 per person plus $8 entrance to the San Luis Waterfall.

Note: The tour starts from La Colina Lodge near the cheese factory. This is a cheap and easy taxi ride from most hotels.

Horseback Riding in the Clouds

(Total duration: 4.5 hours - 4 hours on horse)

This excursion will begin shortly after your Costa Rican guide introduces you to your horse. He will take a moment to give you instructions about horseback riding and about the horse he picked for you…and then, the adventure begins. The route we follow will take you on the unfrequented back roads of Monteverde, along Costa Rica's continental divide and deep into Monteverde’s countryside. These small trails, roads and tracks we will ride upon are mainly used by cattle and cowboys, perfect for a quiet horseback ride where you will ride your way among the clouds and witness the magnificent views of the local countryside, where farms, forest and Gulf of Nicoya shape the sceneries in the upmost stunning fashion.

The trip includes:
Transportation from your hotel and back to our office, an experienced Costa Rican (Spanish speaking) guide, a hot or cold drink, 4 hours horse riding and a lot of fun for riders of all experience levels!

"Farm and Mountain View" Horseback Ride

(Total duration: 2.5 hours)

Because of its length, only lasting 2.5H, this is the easiest horse ride to squeeze-in in any busy traveling schedule without cutting on the fun whatsoever! After “meeting” your horse and your guide (an experienced Costa Rican Cowboy), you will be given simple directions in basic horseback riding. This tour zigzags along little used back roads, where you will pass by farms of coffee, private forests, sugar cane and bananas plantations. This horseback ride, even if short, is much fun, and will take you to view-points where the landscape opens up to reveal the “not so far away” Gulf of Nicoya spilling north and south past the rolling mountain sides winding down to the pacific coast. The scenery is wonderful and you will be given a chance to see much of the diverse plants of the area and with some luck perhaps birds and small animals.

Transportation from your hotel and back, an experienced Costa Rican (Spanish speaking) guide, and 2.5 hours of fun for riders of all experience levels!

An ALL DAY Cowboy Ride!

(Total duration: 6 hours - Over 5 hours on horse)

Enjoy an all day excursion, well away from the tourist areas. With an early start, just a couple hours past the crack of dawn, we will pick you up at your hotel in the Monteverde area and drive you to our nearby farm. There, get a real taste of the Costa Rican Cowboy’s life, and help your guide prepare and feed the horses before he gives you basic instruction and guidance about horseback riding and about the horse he picked for you…. And now, let the fantastic 5 hour-long journey begins. After a few hours, we will make a stop and provide you with a picnic by our river, perfect for a little rest, a swim, and perhaps monkeys and birds seeing. The tour lasts at least 6H and takes you all over the countryside, offering gorgeous scenery at each curve of the trail!

The tour includes:
Transportation from your hotel and back, an experienced Costa Rican (Spanish speaking) guide, a picnic, a swim in the river, over five hours horseback riding and a lot of fun!

Cost:
US$ 75 per person.
